With Annabel James
Chiropractic is the largest natural health care discipline in the United Kingdom. It was founded in 1895, however recorded evidence of spinal manipulation as a form of health care goes back over 2000 years. Hippocrates told us ‘Look well to the spine for the cause of disease’. And this is what we do as chiropractors.
Every body function is regulated by the nervous system from digestion to concentration, muscle weakness to pain, and hearing to breathing. The focus of chiropractic on the nervous system results in most of our treatments focusing on the spine and skull. The fundamental goal of chiropractic is to ensure that all messages from the nervous system flow uninterrupted throughout your body.
The nervous system is the master control system of your body, creating communication throughout your body’s systems. The central parts of this communication system are housed within the skull and spine. If the channels of this communication system (your nerves) become damaged or compromised in any way then messages get distorted and consequently body function is compromised. This distortion can manifest in over or under stimulation of the nerves and the consequence is what chiropractors call dis-ease. This means that your body is functioning sub optimally.
Chiropractic achieves its goal of optimum nervous system function through gentle manipulation and adjustment of bones and soft tissue (muscles, ligaments, tendons and fascia). Most adjustments are comfortable to receive and many patients comment on how relaxing the treatment is. There are many different forms of chiropractic manipulation so ask your chiropractor about the techniques they practise.
Chiropractic can help you with a variety of health problems and can also be used as a form of ‘wellness’ care. Lower back pain, posture, flexibility, muscle strength, brain function and infantile colic are just some of the issues with which chiropractic may be able to help you. Chiropractic is a gentle, effective form of health care suitable for all ages from birth.
